EcoHouse Design Competition (Phase 2)

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Design the competition from scratch (COMPLETE)
  • Develop the detailed rules and criteria for each contest and for the overall competition (COMPLETE)
  • Modify the Phase 1 data acquisition system, as necessary (IN PROGRESS)
  • Modify the Phase 1 scoring engine and data visualization interface, as necessary
  • Create and calibrate the detailed building energy models using OpenStudio (IN PROGRESS)
  • Collect, validate, analyze, process, and publish the measured and simulation data
  • Administer the official monitoring periods
  • Design, fabricate, assemble, test, and operate a portable data acquisition system

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Conducted design development reviews and chaired the jury (April–May 2012)
  • Planned and led the pre-competition team workshop (February–March 2013)
  • Competition development and administration (development from October 2013 to August 2014; administration from September 2014 to December 2014)
    • Recruited the U.S. jurors
    • Chaired the competition juries
    • Designed, fabricated, assembled, tested, installed, commissioned, and managed the data acquisition system
    • Designed, developed, tested, deployed, and managed the data visualization and scoring engine and interface
    • Managed the daily contest tasks and team coordination during the competition evaluation period
    • Normalized the net energy measurements to weather conditions
    • Developed the competition website before the competition, hosted it during the competition, and helped migrate it to client servers after the competition
    • Published the competition Rules document and conducted Rules reviews and inspections before and during the competition
    • Performed project management tasks

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and train student members of the research team (ongoing)
  • Design, assemble, test, install, commission, and manage the data acquisition system (completed)
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and manage the data visualization interface (completed)
  • Assist the client’s contractor with a remodel of the building’s mechanical room (completed)
  • Expand and reconfigure the data acquisition system as a building automation/control and research-grade monitoring system (completed)
  • Co-design (with the student team members) a mobile data acquisition system for use in natural ventilation CFD model calibrations and other research projects (completed)
  • Collect, validate, and publish measured data for consumption by research team members (ongoing)

Intensive Load Monitoring for the Development of Residential Baseline Electricity Consumption Profiles in Massachusetts

Client: Navigant Consulting on behalf of Mass Save

Project Status: Ongoing

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Led the design, specification, and testing of a flexible yet accurate metering system for intensive load monitoring in various types of residential buildings
  • Led the installation and commissioning of the metering system in 23 Boston-area houses

Remote Data Acquisition System Installation Support for Oman EcoHouses

Clients: Dhofar University, Higher College of Technology, Sultan Qaboos University, and German University of Technology EcoHouse teams. Live to Zero has a separate contract with each institution. The institutions shared costs.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Developed more than 50 YouTube videos that instruct EcoHouse teams how to make data acquisition system additions and modifications for Phase 2 of the EcoHouse Design Competition
  • Remotely supported the teams’ installation activities

Energy Efficiency for Business Program Evaluation, Measurement, and Verification

Client: Navigant Consulting on behalf of Duke Energy Progress

Project Status: Complete

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Performed 33 measurement and verification site visits for commercial and industrial customers in North Carolina and South Carolina who had recently completed lighting retrofit projects that were subsidized by Duke Energy Progress’ Energy Efficiency for Business Program
  • Interviewed customers to review and document lighting usage patterns, energy conservation strategies, and noteworthy anomalies
  • Installed and subsequently retrieved from 5–15 lighting event loggers at each site
  • Performed detailed fixture counts
  • Identified each unique fixture type and documented its make/model number and performance specifications
  • Transmitted logger data, fixture counts, unique fixture specifications, and other findings to Navigant for further analysis
